EID Tags becoming mandatory in 2025

In September 2022, the Australian Government mandated that all newborn lambs and kids must be tagged with electronic identification tags (EIDs) from January 1st, 2025. This system will mean a change from a mob-based traceability system to one where individual sheep and goats will be traced using electronic identification tags (eID), similar to what occurs for cattle.

Why?

The frequency of biosecurity incursions and the associated economic, community and environmental risks and impacts are increasing. The direct economic impact of an incursion of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) to the NSW livestock sector is estimated to be $20 billion.

A more accurate and timely traceability system is required to reduce the impact on our livestock industries from an emergency animal disease or food safety event and protect market access and our “clean green” reputation.

EID Equipment Rebate

To assist with the implementation of electronic identification (eID) for sheep and goats, South Australian producers can apply for a rebate on the costs of equipment needed to conduct and report property to property (P2P) movements under the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS).

Eligible producers can apply for up to 75% of the cost of essential equipment. The maximum amount you can apply for is determined by the average head movement to your property from another property (P2P) during the past 3 years (2021 to 2023). You can claim a rebate of…

• Up to $500 for 100 or less animal movements annually onto your property
• Up to $2,000 for 101 to 5,000 animal movements annually onto your property
• Up to $20,000 for more than 5,000 animal movements annually onto your property

For example, if your head movements for the past 3 years were 5250 (2021) , 4850 (2022), and 5010 (2023), then your annual average is 5036 animals so you could apply for up a rebate of to $20,000.
